Today’s topic was the fiscal cliff and debt ceiling, with guest Catherine Crier, journalist and former Texas judge. Both terms, it was decided, are artifices created by Congress, and easily manipulated for political rather than economic purposes. The Bush era tax cuts, never meant to be permanent, were also discussed. Allowing them to expire would not be a tax increase, as some claimed, but a return to previous levels. According to Crier, “Tax rates are virtually at an all-time low, despite political rhetoric to the contrary, in the last 50 years.”

    Episode 27: November 15, 2012

Heather and her high school film class called into the show to ask about the General Petreus expose/scandal and how it related to the Benghazi attack. They also wanted to discuss the ripple effects and who are we as citizens to believe concerning the events of that attack. Sean stated, “There will never be complete certainty. We will never know 100%. So as citizens, what we have to do is decide how much time and energy it’s our responsibility to invest in order to understand it to the best of our ability.” The teacher compared the General Petreus scandal to a morality tale and suggested it could be used as a learning tool. Sean agreed and pointed out that the General Petreus’s affair and how the Benghazi attack was handled by the government are only part of a larger diplomatic picture. “The way in which we interact with those countries from a financial perspective, from a military perspective and hopefully, ultimately, from a diplomatic perspective is really going to determine how much peace, how much war there is.”
